Teong was born and raised in Malaysia, and he is ethnically Chinese. He came to the US in 1998 to pursue a college degree. He graduated in 2001 as a chemist and a physicist from Southern Oregon University, in the art-steeped city of Ashland. He graduated with a Masters degree from UO one year later. He is a trained polymer chemist, pursuing a successful career in the adhesive industry. In his childhood, his parents had the foresight to immerse him in painting, calligraphy and music, thus promoting a balance to his scientific and slightly analytical nature. After a 10-year hiatus from painting, he has resumed an old interest once more. Watercolor is his medium. He prefers to paint still life and landscapes, with an emphasis on natural beauty found through day-to-day observations.
Artist’s Statement:I like to paint for friends and family members. To me, a painting is a gift of time and effort, but mostly thought. It is customized and specific, solely with that one focus in mind, layer after layer, brush stroke after brush stroke. I like to paint nature, sights seen on a normal day, little scenes that are taken for granted or missed, because each of us is always so busy and on the move. However, this fact cannot diminish how precious they are. I love plants, flowers and animals, and so I like to memorialize them. I tend to be more naturalistic, but when the mood is right, the paintings come out whimsical.
