Judith Mason-Macomber
541.988.1232

Judith Mason-Macomber was born in Chicago and grew up in Evanston, Illinois. She prepared herself to paint by stealing her mother's bed sheets, crayoning a design of fish around the bottom and making a dirndl skirt. Later in Chicago, she acted, performed as a concert pianist and free-lanced as a photographer. Although her formal studies at the Chicago Institute of Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago brought her into the orbits of Aaron Siskin, Harry Callahan and later Harry Bouris. She credits Richard Koppe chiefly among her influences for encouraging her interest in representation at a time when those who cultivated it were considered as paleolithic. Outside the academy, working in advertising for eighteen to support three daughters, she learned to teach herself. Finding only flat land in the midwest, she moved to Oregon to paint mountains, and discovered mountains come bundled with sky and water. She continues to paint creatures including people and some fish, but not (usually) on her clothes.

Among her extensive credits she is a signature member of both the Northwest Pastel Society and the Pastel Society of Oregon. She is currently gallery co-director of Emerald Art Center, Springfield, OR, and she is a leading member of Springfield Arts Commission, Springfield, OR.

She has exhibited extensively in shows all over the country, and has works in many corporate and private collections.
