Biography:
I took my only art class when I was a student at Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1958. In that class, I learned the techniques of watercolor that I still employ in my paintings today, even though it was years from that date before I took up painting again. I went to graduate school at a number of colleges and universities, ending up at the University of Oregon in the 1980's. Then I became a free-lance writer, publishing magazine articles and short stories. I've self-published two books, Yellow Leaves and Prankster Memoirs.
I still do write, but I have devoted more time and energy to painting, not only my watercolors but also oils on canvas. My oil painting is largely self-taught, and I have found the technique to be entirely different from the watercolors. With watercolors, I paint rapidly and get my intended effect on my first effort or not at all. With oils, I add layers of paint, using a palette knife -- and sometimes allowing the painting to dry between layers -- until I have achieved a textured effect. Then I usually apply the finishing details with brush strokes. Since I enjoy fishing, my subjects are mainly fishing scenes and landscapes. My style tends to be more impressionistic than naturalistic.
